Why this is for you.
You’ve read the Sutras, or tried to. Maybe the words felt true but wouldn’t stay. Maybe a teacher once said something that opened a door, and you’ve been looking for the rest of that sentence ever since. These texts were never meant to be read alone, or quickly. They were meant to be read with other people, a little at a time, and practiced before the next line.
That’s what this year is. 90 minutes a week, three weeks each month, where the philosophy stops being something you admire and becomes something you carry. We use the Sutras as our spine, and alongside them, the texts and traditions that give them context: the Gītā, the Upanishads, the Vedas, and the devotional and musical lineages that grew from the same roots. I built this for people who want the yoga they practice to be the yoga they live, in how they breathe, how they speak, how they decide. If that’s you, you’re exactly who I had in mind.
You’ll feel at home here if you’re:
» A practitioner who senses there’s more beneath the poses
» A teacher who wants the philosophy to hold up in your own classes
» Someone who has tried to read the texts alone and wants company
» Drawn to the devotional and musical side of the tradition
» A seer who wants deeper inquiry and to expand their knowledge and wisdom
Every class will be recorded, so you can rewatch or watch on your own time. You don’t need to attend the classes live, they are available for you when the time throughout the week is right for you.
What this online program is
The name comes from something a teacher said to me years ago, that went something like this: Don't study the yogi, wear the shoes of one. Walk, eat, speak, breathe the way they do. Notice what changes when you do that.
It's harder than reading about it, which is exactly the point. This is a year of trying the shoes on together, and of walking far enough in them to find out where they go.
Roughly once a month a guest teaches the session. Some are traditional teachers from the lineage I study in, some are Indian classical musicians, some are Western or non-traditional teachers whose work I trust and admire. Whoever it is, we tie what they share back to the text we're in.
What we do each week
Every session is one hour, live on Zoom (or the like), and recorded.
The teaching (about 40 minutes). We move through the Yoga Sutras in order, a few at a time, and bring in the Upanishads, the Vedas and the Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā wherever they light the text up. Questions always welcome, and usually the best part.
The journalling (about 15 minutes). An integration of what has been learned so that it can be embodied.
The practice (about 20 minutes). Something gentle that puts the teaching in the body: a short movement sequence, prāṇāyāma (breath practice), a meditation, or a mantra. No mat needed; a chair is fine.
The share (about 15 minutes). A change for us all to drop in together and hear the differences and similarities between what we’ve all received and learned about ouserlves from that session.
The thread. A small WhatsApp group between sessions for questions, reflections, and the occasional voice note from me when something won’t wait until next week. The whole tech stack is just Zoom and WhatsApp.
Where this comes from
I first ran Shoes of a Yogi in 2020, in a much smaller way, and it has stayed with me ever since, waiting to be birthed. I’ve spent most of the years since without a fixed address, moving through (mostly) Asia and learning wherever the knowledge was being kept: from people to texts to Rishikesh with my teachers to music rooms to dance floors. Everywhere I went, this ancient knowledge seemed to have come with me, even if dormant at times.
That’s the world I want to bring you into. Not a course you complete, but a year of sitting with the texts the way I was taught to sit with them: slowly, with people, and with a practice afterwards so the words have somewhere to go. We’ll read what the rishis wrote down and the teachers who came after them. We’ll bring in the music and the people I’ve learned it from. And we’ll do it from wherever we each happen to be, because that’s how I’ve lived this practice for years, and it has never once been a reason to stop.
The year at a glance
We read the Sutras in order, one pāda (book) per season, and bring in the other texts wherever they belong.
January to March · Samādhi Pāda
The first book asks the only question that matters: what is yoga, and what is the mind doing when it isn’t doing yoga? We start here, with the Upanishads alongside for older roots of similar ideas.
April to June · Sādhana Pāda
The practice itself. This is most of the eight limbs, the obstacles to be aware of, the agreements to follow, and guidance we’re given to live in alignment with Yoga. At times, we will explore the Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā for how it all meets the body.
July to September · Vibhūti Pāda
Attention, absorption, and what the tradition says happens when the practice deepens. This is where the devotional and musical lineages come in, because sound is one of the oldest ways in.
October to December · Kaivalya Pāda
Freedom, and how to live afterwards. We close the circle with the Vedas and a last look at the whole path, and then we continue to go and live it.
Any intellectual focus may subtly shift or change to fit the needs of the group.
A note on timing: I’m a nomad and I frequently change time zones. So the weekly time may shift from month to month; I'll announce each month's time before it begins. Every session is recorded and shared within a day, so if a month timing doesn't suit you, the only thing you miss is asking your questions and sharing live, and the WhatsApp group is always there for that.
What they say…
"She is full of wisdom, and the fact that it comes from her personal experiences as well makes it even more special. Jenn is calm, loving, and really funny, making this sometimes scary journey of self-knowledge a more relaxed and enjoyable ride." — Larissa
"Jenn was the teacher and facilitator in two programs she led based on yogic principles, Shoes of a Yogi: she changed my view of the world and is what I needed to grow spiritually and gain inner peace." — Noémie
"Her classes always have intentions, but are not pre-planned to the minute, but adjusted to the audience. I love her enthusiasm and humour, which radiates from her cool, quirky Canadianness." — Geoff
